Welcome to one of our three "It’s All About You" interviews, designed to help you
live better with psoriasis. Join us as Pat McClelland, a Registered Nurse who cares
for psoriasis patients, answers questions on the topic of "Everyday Living."
My first question is about tanning. Tanning’s gotten a mixed reaction. What’s your
view on tanning for people with psoriasis?
For the psoriasis patient, it is very beneficial, although we encourage them not
to get a sunburn, as this may cause their psoriasis to flare. It is important, though,
that everybody wear sunscreen daily.
I see. As for skincare, how should I take care of my skin on a regular basis?
I think the most important thing for patients who have psoriasis or any skin disease
is to make sure that they moisturize and keep their skin well-hydrated. Many patients
just use their medications and forget that hydration from different emollients is
very, very important for their well-being.
The things that sometimes irritate my skin are my bedding and towels. Are there
certain fabrics that can minimize the irritation?
I think it’s very important when you’re buying bedding or toweling, that you have
fabrics that are non-abrasive and that are soft on your skin. A few suggestions
might be cotton, flannel, or good old fleece.
What types of bath soaps and laundry detergents are best for people with psoriasis?
When choosing bath soaps and laundry detergents, look for something that is mild
and without perfume. I would also caution you when you’re buying soap to stay away
from antibacterial soaps or lotions, because they could be too harsh on your skin
also.
Would using a humidifier help soothe my skin? Do I need to get one?
I think humidifiers are great for people who have dry skin. I also think they’re
important for psoriasis patients that live in cold climates or very dry climates,
and also when temperatures are changing. But I don’t think they are necessary for
all patients.
And what are some things I can do to reduce my psoriasis symptoms,
besides staying on track with my treatment?
It’s important for you to have a good diet, good exercise, good sleep patterns,
good moisturizing, and I think these will all help in reducing your stress when
you have a disease like psoriasis.
You mentioned exercise. What are the benefits of exercise for people with psoriasis?
Exercise is great for everyone, including patients with psoriasis. By maintaining
a good weight, it may improve your self-confidence and well-being.
I love to travel. Do you have some tips on choosing a vacation destination and on
dealing with stress and fatigue on a trip?
When you are choosing a vacation destination, you should look at how hot, how cold,
or how dry the place will be. You also need to look at how long you will be away,
to see if it is conducive for your therapy.
I think when you are traveling and you are stressed, you need a plan, you need to be proactive, and you have to look after yourself. I think what’s important is that
you get enough sleep, and you keep yourself from being overstressed.
Thank you for talking to me. I can definitely use your tips in my everyday life.
